Yom Kippur: what happens

The fast begins before sunset on the eve and ends at nightfall the next day. People abstain from food, drink, washing, anointing, leather shoes and marital relations.

The evening service opens with Kol Nidre. The day has five services, including Neilah, the closing prayer, and the shofar is sounded as the fast ends.

What people do

  • A full meal before the fast, on the eve, and a candle lit for the holiday.
  • Wearing white, a widespread custom symbolizing purity.
  • Seeking forgiveness from people one has wronged before Yom Kippur.
