Neighborhoods

  • The Main (Mile End). Saint-Laurent Boulevard, where Eastern European Jews first settled.
  • Outremont and Westmount. Where the community moved between 1921 and 1931.
  • Côte-Saint-Luc, Hampstead, Snowdon. Today, with the West Island, the main centers of Jewish life; Côte-Saint-Luc had 5,580 Sephardim in 2011.

The community

Montreal is a city where Jewish life runs in English, French and Hebrew.

Canada's first Jewish congregation, the Sephardi Shearith Israel, was founded in 1768; it moved to Notre-Dame Street in 1777 and has occupied its present building at 4894 Saint-Kevin Avenue in Snowdon since 1947. The Ashkenazi synagogue Shaar Hashomayim dates from 1846. Eastern European Jews first settled around Saint-Laurent Boulevard (The Main), then moved to Outremont and Westmount between 1921 and 1931. In 2021 Greater Montreal counted 90,250 Jews, 2.1 percent of its population, the first increase in fifty years. After 1945, Sephardi Jews from North Africa and the Middle East arrived: from 1960 to 1991, 7,995 Moroccan Jews settled in Montreal. Their French helped them integrate, since Ashkenazi institutions were mostly English-speaking. In 2011 the region had 22,225 Sephardim among 90,780 Jews. The French-speaking Sephardi association was founded in 1966, the Maimonides school in 1969, and the Sephardi Festival has been held every year since 1980.
