Fast of Gedaliah: what it is

It is a minor fast: it begins at dawn and ends at nightfall, with no ban on washing or on leather shoes. When the 3rd of Tishrei falls on Shabbat, the fast moves to Sunday.

It marks the killing of Gedaliah son of Ahikam, appointed governor by the Babylonians, whose murder ended the Jewish presence in Judea (Jeremiah 40-41, II Kings 25).

What people do

  • No eating or drinking from dawn to nightfall.
  • Extra prayers of supplication, and the reading of “Vayechal” from the Torah at the morning and afternoon services.
