Frequently asked questions

Why does the Hebrew date change at sunset?

In the Jewish calendar the day begins in the evening: “there was evening and there was morning” (Genesis 1:5). On Friday evening, after sunset, it is already Shabbat. Tick “After sunset” for a date whose time is past sunset.

How many months does the Hebrew year have?

Twelve months in a regular year and thirteen in a leap year (seven years in every nineteen): a second Adar is added. A month has 29 or 30 days, and a year 353 to 385 days.

What are Adar I and Adar II?

In a leap year the added month is Adar I and the next one Adar II. Purim and the dates tied to it fall in Adar II; a Hebrew birthday in Adar follows its own rules, which the yahrzeit calculator details.
