Fast of Esther: what it is
The Fast of Esther recalls the three days of fasting by Esther and the Jews of Shushan (Esther 4:16) and the fast of the Jews before the fighting (9:31). It is a minor fast, from dawn to nightfall.
When the 13th of Adar falls on Shabbat the fast is brought forward to the Thursday before. In a leap year it is kept in Adar II.
What people do
- No eating or drinking from dawn to nightfall.
- Reading “Vayechal” from the Torah and saying Aneinu at the afternoon service.
- Giving three half-coins before the Megillah reading, as is customary (Machatzit HaShekel).
