Seventeenth of Tammuz: what it is

The Mishnah (Taanit 4:6) links five calamities to it, including the breach of Jerusalem’s walls before the destruction of the Second Temple. It is a minor fast, from dawn to nightfall; when the 17th of Tammuz falls on Shabbat it is postponed to Sunday.

It opens the Three Weeks, Bein Hametzarim, up to the Ninth of Av. Many communities keep mourning customs that grow stricter from the 1st of Av.

What people do

  • No eating or drinking from dawn to nightfall.
  • Prayers of supplication.
  • Avoiding celebrations and music during the Three Weeks, according to each community’s custom.
