Tisha B'Av: what happens

According to the Mishnah (Taanit 4:6), the First Temple (586 BCE) and the Second (70 CE) were destroyed on the 9th of Av. It is a major fast, of twenty-five hours, from sunset the evening before to nightfall.

People abstain from eating, drinking, washing, anointing, leather shoes and marital relations; they sit on the floor or a low seat until midday. In synagogue the book of Lamentations (Eicha) and kinot are read.

When the 9th of Av falls on Shabbat the fast is postponed to Sunday, the 10th of Av.

What people do

  • Reading Eicha (Lamentations) and kinot in synagogue.
  • Sitting on the floor or a low seat until midday.
  • Not studying Torah, except mourning texts, during the fast.
  • Putting on tefillin and tallit only at the afternoon service, according to custom.
