Tenth of Tevet: what happens
On the 10th of Tevet the Babylonian armies began to besiege Jerusalem (II Kings 25:1, Ezekiel 24:1-2). It is a minor fast, from dawn to nightfall. It can fall on a Friday, the only minor fast that can: it then ends with the start of Shabbat.
In Israel the Chief Rabbinate also made it the general Kaddish day for victims of the Holocaust whose date of death is unknown.
What people do
- No eating or drinking from dawn to nightfall.
- Extra prayers of supplication (Selichot).
For a halakhic ruling, ask your rabbi.
