Tu BiShvat: what it is

The Mishnah (Rosh Hashanah 1:1) lists it as one of four new years. It is not a yom tov. Fruit is eaten, especially the kinds the Torah praises in the land of Israel: wheat, barley, grape, fig, pomegranate, olive and date.

The kabbalists developed a Tu BiShvat seder with four cups of wine and fruit, which many communities have adopted. In Israel, trees are planted.

What people do

  • Eating fruit, especially from the seven species.
  • A Tu BiShvat seder, with four cups of wine and fruit.
  • Planting a tree, widespread in Israel.
  • Tachanun is not said.

Also written: Tu BiShvat, Tu B’Shvat, Tu Bishvat, Tu Bishvat, Tou Bichvat.
