Purim: what it is
Purim commemorates the deliverance of the Jews of the Persian empire from Haman’s decree (book of Esther). The Megillah, the scroll of Esther, is read in the evening and the morning; the day is marked by gifts, charity and a festive meal.
Cities walled since the time of Joshua, Jerusalem among them, keep Purim on the 15th of Adar, called Shushan Purim (Esther 9:18-19, Talmud, Megillah 2a). In a leap year Purim is kept in Adar II.
What people do
- Hearing the Megillah in the evening and the morning.
- Mishloach manot: sending at least two ready-to-eat foods to at least one person.
- Matanot la’evyonim: gifts to at least two poor people.
- A festive meal, the seudah, and costumes, a widespread custom.
