Alef = 1 … Tav = 400; final letters keep the value of their regular form. Like standard, with the finals: kaf 500, mem 600, nun 700, pe 800, tsadi 900. Each letter is reduced to one digit: 10 becomes 1, 200 becomes 2. Each letter is worth its position: alef = 1 … tav = 22.

The rules
Gematria gives every Hebrew letter a numerical value; the value of a word is the sum of its letters. Vowel points and signs that are not Hebrew letters are ignored.
The standard method (mispar hechrachi) is the most widely used and is the one the Moed app uses. The other three are classical variants.
Gematria is a traditional tool of interpretation: an equal value is not proof, it is a connection.
For a halakhic ruling, ask your rabbi.
Frequently asked questions
What is gematria?
Gematria is the numerical value of the Hebrew letters: alef is 1, bet 2, and so on up to tav, 400. Jewish tradition uses it to connect words of equal value.
What is the gematria of “chai” (life)?
Chet (8) plus yod (10) make 18: that is why 18 is a lucky number and gifts are often given in multiples of 18.
Can I calculate with Latin letters?
The tool converts a Latin transcription to Hebrew approximately (“s” may be samekh or shin, “t” tav or tet): check the letters it suggests.
