The rules
A child becomes bar mitzvah at thirteen and bat mitzvah at twelve, on the Hebrew day of the birthday. If the birth took place after sunset, it counts for the next Hebrew day.
The occasion is most often marked in synagogue on the Shabbat that follows or precedes, depending on the community; a boy may also be called to the Torah the following Monday or Thursday. For a bat mitzvah, customs vary a great deal between communities.
Born in Adar of a regular year with majority in a leap year, or the reverse: the Adar rules of the yahrzeit calculator apply.
For a halakhic ruling, ask your rabbi.
Frequently asked questions
At what age is someone bar mitzvah?
At thirteen for a boy, at twelve for a girl: the age of religious responsibility.
Does the date change every year?
The Hebrew day is fixed, but its civil date changes. The tool works out the date in the year of majority.
Do you have to wait for Shabbat?
No: the child is bar or bat mitzvah from the Hebrew day itself. The reading in synagogue is on Shabbat, Monday or Thursday.
