Hanukkah: what happens
Hanukkah commemorates the recapture of the Temple in Jerusalem by the Maccabees and its rededication (Talmud, Shabbat 21b, which tells of the jar of oil that burned for eight days). It is not a yom tov: work is permitted.
The menorah, or hanukkiah, is lit at nightfall: from sunset according to some customs, from the appearance of the stars according to others. On Friday it is lit before Shabbat begins; on Saturday night, after Shabbat ends.
What people do
- One light on the first night, one more each night up to eight, kindled with the shamash.
- The blessings before lighting: three on the first night, two on the others.
- Adding Al Hanisim to the prayers and saying full Hallel each day.
- Eating foods fried in oil (sufganiyot, latkes) and playing with the dreidel.
For a halakhic ruling, ask your rabbi.
