Sukkot: what happens

Sukkot recalls the booths in which the Israelites lived in the wilderness (Leviticus 23:42-43). The first day is yom tov (the first two in the diaspora), followed by the intermediate days, Chol Hamoed, up to Hoshana Raba.

The four species, the lulav, etrog, hadassim and aravot, are taken each day except Shabbat, and meals are eaten in the sukkah.

What people do

  • Eating, and for many sleeping, in the sukkah, a hut with a roof of branches.
  • Waving the four species during Hallel.
  • Inviting the Ushpizin, the symbolic guests of the sukkah, and real ones.

For a halakhic ruling, ask your rabbi.
