Simchat Torah: what happens

In the evening and the morning all the scrolls are taken from the ark and carried in seven dancing circuits, the hakafot. At the morning service the end of Deuteronomy (Vezot Haberakhah) is read, followed by the beginning of Genesis.

In Israel Simchat Torah falls on Shemini Atzeret; in the diaspora it is the second day of that festival.

What people do

  • The hakafot: seven dancing circuits with the Torah scrolls.
  • Everyone is called up to the Torah, children included.
  • The Chatan Torah and Chatan Bereshit are honored with the last and first readings.

For a halakhic ruling, ask your rabbi.
