Shemini Atzeret: what happens

Shemini Atzeret is a yom tov separate from Sukkot. The prayer for rain, Tefilat Geshem, is recited, and in many communities Yizkor too.

In the diaspora the next day, the 23rd of Tishrei, is Simchat Torah. In Israel, Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah are the same day.

What people do

  • Reciting the prayer for rain (Tefilat Geshem).
  • In the diaspora, many still eat in the sukkah, without the blessing.
  • Yizkor in many communities.

For a halakhic ruling, ask your rabbi.
