Shavuot: what happens

Shavuot, “weeks”, closes the seven weeks of the Omer, counted from the second night of Passover. It commemorates the giving of the Torah at Sinai (Exodus 19-20) and, in the Torah, is the festival of the first fruits.

It is a two-day yom tov in the diaspora and one day in Israel. The Ten Commandments are read from the Torah and, in many communities, the book of Ruth.

What people do

  • Staying up the night to study Torah (Tikkun Leil Shavuot).
  • Eating dairy foods, a widespread custom.
  • Reading the book of Ruth.
  • Decorating the synagogue and home with greenery and flowers.

For a halakhic ruling, ask your rabbi.
