Rosh Hashanah: what happens

Rosh Hashanah opens the Hebrew year and the month of Tishrei. Both days are yom tov, in Israel as in the diaspora: festival candles are lit on the eve, as for Shabbat, and the day is spent in prayer.

The shofar, a ram’s horn, is sounded during the morning service; when the first day falls on Shabbat it is not sounded that day. Rosh Hashanah also opens the ten days of repentance that end on Yom Kippur.

What people do

  • Hearing the shofar in synagogue.
  • Dipping a piece of apple in honey at the evening meal, with a prayer for a sweet year.
  • Eating foods chosen for their name or meaning (pomegranate, fish head, dates); the custom varies by community.
  • Tashlich on the first day (the second if the first is Shabbat): going to flowing water and reciting verses of repentance.

For a halakhic ruling, ask your rabbi.
