Passover: what happens

Passover commemorates the Exodus from Egypt (Exodus 12-13). During the festival no chametz, leavened dough of wheat, barley, spelt, oats or rye, is eaten or owned, and matzah is eaten. The night before, chametz is searched for; the morning of the 14th, it is burned.

On the night of the 15th of Nisan (and of the 16th in the diaspora) a seder is held, a ritual meal that follows the Haggadah: four cups of wine, matzah, bitter herbs and charoset. The first and last days are yom tov; the days between are Chol Hamoed.

What people do

  • Holding the seder with the Haggadah, four cups of wine, matzah and bitter herbs.
  • Searching for chametz (bedikat chametz) on the night before, then burning it.
  • Eating only foods kosher for Passover throughout the festival.
  • Counting the Omer from the second night.

For a halakhic ruling, ask your rabbi.
