Yom HaZikaron: what happens

On the eve of Yom HaAtzma’ut, Israel honors the soldiers who have fallen and the victims of terror attacks. Two sirens sound: a one-minute siren in the evening, at eight, and a two-minute one in the morning, at eleven.

The date is moved earlier or later by a day or two when Independence Day would fall near Shabbat or on a Monday. Places of entertainment are closed and ceremonies are held in military cemeteries.

What people do

  • Standing during the siren.
  • Visiting military cemeteries.
  • Lighting a memorial candle.

For a halakhic ruling, ask your rabbi.
