Yom HaShoah: what happens

Set by the Knesset in 1951, the day remembers the six million Jews murdered in the Shoah, on the 27th of Nisan, a week after the Warsaw Ghetto uprising. The date is moved earlier or later when it falls close to Shabbat.

In Israel a siren sounds at ten in the morning and everything stops for two minutes; places of entertainment are closed. Outside Israel, communities and institutions hold ceremonies.

What people do

  • Two minutes of silence at the sound of the siren, in Israel.
  • Lighting a memorial candle and saying Kaddish for those with no grave.
  • Attending memorial ceremonies.

For a halakhic ruling, ask your rabbi.
