On the 5th of Iyar 5708 (May 14, 1948) David Ben-Gurion proclaimed the State of Israel. The celebration follows Yom HaZikaron immediately, at sunset, with ceremonies, fireworks and barbecues.

The date is moved earlier or later when the 5th of Iyar falls on a Friday, Shabbat or Monday, to avoid desecrating Shabbat.

What people do

  • Saying Hallel, according to the community’s custom.
  • Attending ceremonies and fireworks.
  • An outdoor barbecue, the “al ha’esh”.

For a halakhic ruling, ask your rabbi.
