Shushan Purim: what happens

In Shushan, the Persian capital, the fighting lasted a day longer, so Purim is kept there on the 15th of Adar (Esther 9:18). The Mishnah (Megillah 1:1) extends this to cities walled since Joshua; today, mainly Jerusalem.

Everywhere else, the 15th of Adar is an ordinary day, with no Tachanun, fasting or eulogies. When it falls on Shabbat, Purim is spread over three days in Jerusalem, the “Purim Meshulash”.

What people do

  • In Jerusalem: the Megillah is read on the night of the 14th and the morning of the 15th of Adar.
  • In Jerusalem too: gifts and the festive meal on the 15th.
  • Elsewhere, Tachanun is not said that day.
