Lag BaOmer: what happens

The Talmud (Yevamot 62b) tells that twenty-four thousand students of Rabbi Akiva died between Passover and Shavuot; tradition places the end of the plague on the 33rd day of the Omer. During these weeks many communities keep mourning customs, which are relaxed on this day.

Tradition also makes it the hillula of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, at Meron in the Galilee, where hundreds of thousands of pilgrims gather. Bonfires are lit.

What people do

  • Lighting bonfires, widespread in Israel.
  • Pilgrimage to Meron, to the tomb of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai.
  • Weddings, haircuts and music, permitted by the custom of many communities.
  • The upsherin, a boy’s first haircut at three (the chalaka).

For a halakhic ruling, ask your rabbi.
