Tu B'Av: what it is

The Mishnah (Taanit 4:8) says there were no days as joyful in Israel as the 15th of Av and Yom Kippur: the young women of Jerusalem went out to dance in the vineyards. It is not a yom tov.

The 15th of Av also marks the end of the mourning of the month of Av, and in Israel today it has become a festival of love.

What people do

  • Tachanun is not said.
  • Celebrating love and engagements, widespread in Israel.
  • Wishing well to couples about to marry.

Also written: Tu B’Av, Tu BeAv, Tu Be’av, Tou Beav.
