Rosh Chodesh: what it is
The Hebrew month follows the moon: it has 29 or 30 days. When the previous month has thirty days, its thirtieth day is the first day of Rosh Chodesh and the next one is the second. The month is announced in synagogue on the Shabbat before (Shabbat Mevarchim).
Rosh Chodesh is not a yom tov. Hallel is said, Ya’aleh VeYavo is added to the prayer and the Grace after meals, and a special passage is read from the Torah. In many communities women refrain from certain kinds of work on this day.
What people do
- Saying Hallel and reading the Torah at the morning service.
- Adding Ya’aleh VeYavo to the Amidah and Birkat Hamazon.
- Blessing the month on the Shabbat before.
