Isru Chag: what it is

Isru Chag, “bind the festival” (Psalms 118:27), is the day after the last day of Passover, Shavuot and Sukkot (that is, after Simchat Torah). It is not a yom tov, but it is marked by prolonging the joy of the festival.

Tachanun is not said, no fast is held and no eulogies are given. The dates depend on whether you follow the diaspora or Israel, where the festivals are one day shorter.

What people do

  • Tachanun is not said.
  • No fasting and no eulogies.
  • Prolonging the festive joy with a meal, as is customary.
