Hoshana Raba: what it is
It is the last day of Chol Hamoed, the eve of Shemini Atzeret. At the morning service seven circuits are made around the bimah with the lulav while the Hoshanot are recited, then five willow branches are beaten on the ground.
Tradition sees it as the last day of the judgment that began on Rosh Hashanah. Many communities stay up the night before to study.
